Pair tackling Laurel Run in memory of lost friends

Two members of The Resource Center’s family are going to participate in this year’s Laurel Run in memory of two friends who no longer are with us.

John Pawlak and Andrea Nalepa have been training in preparation for tackling the 5-kilometer walk at Laurel Run.  They’re dedicating their effort in memory of Eric Mackowiak and Diane Muench, two Laurel Run regulars who have passed away.

The idea for John to do the 5K walk came from staff at his home.  John has been riding a stationary bicycle that his sister Lisa gave him, and he now goes for rides that are longer than 3 miles.  Staff at his home informed John that 3 miles is about the same distance as 5 kilometers, and they reminded John (a regular in the much shorter Laurel’s Lap event at Laurel Run) that he had stated in the past that he was capable of completing the 5K.

John took his staff’s suggestion and committed to doing the 5K walk this year.  He announced he was going to dedicate his effort to Eric and Diane, who both used to live in the home where John and Andrea reside.  Eric passed away in 2009, while Diane died this spring.

“Eric was my best friend,” John said.  “Diane had a beautiful smile and personality.”

Seeing John’s excitement and determination to do the 5K walk had an effect on his housemate Andrea, who decided that she also would attempt to do the 5K walk.  While Andrea hasn’t been training as often as John (who wears a pedometer to measure his distance when he walks), she is confident she’ll be able to complete the walk.

And they won’t be doing it alone.  John says his brother Robert, and perhaps a niece and nephew, will be walking with him.  And Aimee-Sue Clark (the daughter of Jen Clark, who works in the home where John and Andrea live) and some of her friends will be walking with John and Andrea as well.  The group decided they needed a name for the team, and John came up with it: American Memories.

The members of American Memories invite others to join them in the 5K walk.  Click here to register, and during the registration process type American Memories in the “Team Name” field.  And if you’d like to make a donation to Laurel Run in support of the American Memories team, click here.
