2012 Laurel Run Dedicated to Silvana Alcivar
She was a steady fixture at Laurel Run, competing in the 5-kilometer walk even when her health was failing her. She also was one of the top fund-raisers for Laurel Run, raising a total of $2,337 since 2007.
Laurel Run co-creator Wayne Hotelling relected on Silvana’s passing.
“Silvana was a very caring and compassionate person. Even during her fight with cancer, she continued to participate in the walk for Laurel Run,” Wayne said.
“Last year during the walk, I caught up with her while running and stopped to talk to her coming down Old Main Road. She confided to me that she didn’t know if she would be ale to finish the walk. So I walked a while with her and we talked; by the tine we were at the bottom of Old Main where I had to leave her, she thanked me and said she thought she could make it now to the finish. I wished her well and went on my way.
“As I was finishing, Silvana was walking up the other side of the street toward her home, and she called out encouragingly to keep going. She had finished even while hurting, but still had time to encourage me to finish.”
Wayne concluded, “Thank you, Silvana. You will be missed this year and in the years to come.”
